Petfinder Foundation - Originally founded in 1996 by a Clemson University Grad student working on her thesis. Betsy Banks Saul and Jared Saul did tremendous work in 2005 when they created a database of pets rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in effort to reunite as many as possible with their family through the Animal Emergency Response Network. As a result 23,000 pets listed, 3,200 pets were reunited. Plus they received approximately 26,000 more inquiries from people who had left their pets behind when evacuating and another 8,000 lost animal notices presumably not related to the Hurricane. With all that attention, in 2006, Discover Communications purchased Pet Finder for Animal Planet Media for reportedly $35M. Now owned by Nestle Purina possibly one of the nations largest kibble manufacturers who purchased it in 2013. You may notice it is the only one on this list that is a .com and no longer a .org. Despite the over-commercialization of it and despite our own experience with Purina, we believe the original founders had extraordinarily good intentions and Petfinder continues to be a digital resource for those who want to adopt.
